PUL vs TPU for Reusable Hygiene Products

A buyer-oriented introduction to specifying waterproof layers in reusable pads and cloth diapers.

What buyers are actually choosing

PUL and TPU terminology is often used differently across suppliers. The key is to confirm the textile base, film or lamination construction, thickness, handfeel, wash performance and supplier documentation for the exact material being quoted.

Questions to include in an RFQ

  • What is the base fabric?
  • What is the waterproof layer or lamination?
  • What thickness or weight is quoted?
  • What wash performance has been verified?
  • What compliance or material documentation is available?

Do not choose by acronym alone

The final product performance depends on the whole construction, not only whether a supplier calls a layer PUL or TPU.
